After over four years’ restoration work, this rifle tower, constructed over an ancient Muslim tower, has finally been reopened. It now holds a curious surprise, the camera obscura.
This is an optical instrument consisting of a white screen, a mirror, enlarging lenses and a tube that peeks out of the top like a periscope. This was the first camera obscura to be built in Navarre and the fifth in Spain.
Used for centuries by leading painters such as Leonardo da Vinci and Vermeer to complement their drawing technique, this contraption is actually quite simple: the light enters through a window, reflects in the mirror and goes through several lenses until it reaches the screen, where it reproduces spectacular views of the city.
If you would also like to learn about the history and curiosities of the medieval tower housing it, come to the meeting point at the Tudela Tourist Office to participate in guided tours that will be offered until January.
