Dressed in white, with colourful pompoms on their backs, the youths of Arantza turn into the mozorro zuriak on Thursday and Friday to celebrate the start of carnival celebrations in the Cinco Villas (Five Towns) district.
They go through the streets of the town and to nearby farmsteads, playing music and dancing to raise some money.
On Saturday the characters become grotesque and evil. As the sun sets, the mozorro beltzak —ogres and terrifying creatures— come out onto the streets to amuse themselves by frightening unwary pedestrians.
This is just the first of the numerous activities that will take place throughout Navarre to celebrate the Carnival.
