1886. A cholera epidemic devastates half of Europe. Navarre also gradually succumbed. Its dwindling population then invoked Saint Francis Xavier, asking him to intercede before the pandemic monster on their behalf. In exchange, the citizens promised to visit his home once a year. That is how the Javieradas began —pilgrimages to Javier Castle which have become consolidated into our tradition and are held regularly since 1940.
This weekend will be the first Javierada of the year. Thousands of Navarrese and visitors will take to the roads from different points in Navarre and make the long trek to the esplanade in front of Javier Castle (50 kilometres from Pamplona).
There, the archbishop himself will preside over the mass to be held in front of the populace on Sunday 2 March at 10.30 am. An exhilarating experience —but make sure you take along at least proper footwear and water.
For religious reasons or for sport, you are assured an unforgettable experience.
