Declared Feasts of National Tourist Interest since 2002, the ceremonies of the Volatín and the Descent of the Angel in Tudela are a must in the Ribera region’s calendar. Both are held at the Plaza de los Fueros, and draw together hundreds of spectators.
The Ceremony of the Volatín takes place on Easter Saturday at 10.00 am and consists of shaking a wooden puppet with articulated limbs symbolising Judas Iscariot and sticking an exploding cigar in its mouth that will divest it of its clothes, soiled by treason.
This performance represents the desperate death of Judas after betraying Jesus. His punishment, in front of the whole town, is merciless.
On the following day, Easter Sunday, the performance to watch is the Descent of the Angel. When the clock in the Plaza de los Fueros strikes 9.00 am, a child dressed as an angel cruises down a rope strung above the crowds to remove the veil from the face of the Virgin Mary. After this the child proclaims “Rejoice Mary, your son has resuscitated!” The crowd then cheers deafeningly.
