According to legend, a terrible epidemic razed Pamplona in 1599. Its inhabitants, desperate and defenceless, saw no solution to their terrible plight. However, a Franciscan monk changed things through a divine revelation. The saving formula consisted in organising a procession during which the faithful carried the figure of Christ with the five wounds inflicted upon him on the cross.
The epidemic miraculously disappeared and the event has been repeated every Maundy Thursday ever since at the church of San Agustín. It is called the Vow of the Five Wounds.
However, the key event of the Holy Week in Pamplona, as in many other towns, is undoubtedly the Procession of the Holy Burial. A total of twelve pasos —religious floats depicting different stages of the Passion— of unparalleled artistic beauty will be carried for all the faithful to see.
The procession will take off at 7.30 pm from the headquarters of the Fraternity of the Passion of the Lord in Calle Dormitalería. The most awaited paso is undoubtedly that of La Dolorosa (Our Lady of Sorrows) who closes off the parade with her impressive black and gold cloak and her 24 carriers.
