Valtierra and its Virgen del Yugo celebrate a legend

Wednesday, 30 April 2008

The story dates back to the 11th century. A lame man from the town of Arguedas was having a nap when he had a revealing vision. The Virgen del Yugo from Valtierra had appeared before him in his dreams.

The townspeople said he was crazy and the Virgin, in an act of goodness, reappeared before him and cured his disability. In 1620 a shrine was built to honour the virgin and since then, every year the townspeople go on a pilgrimage to celebrate this ancient legend.

On Thursday, 1 May, the people from Valtierra will attend mass at 12.00 noon at the esplanade in front of the Shrine to Our Lady of the Yoke, after which they kiss the Virgin’s cloak and proceed to have a meal, accompanied by the sound of Navarrese jotas.
