You certainly should take advantage of the 14th 'Jornadas de Exaltación de la Verdura' ( Vegetable Festival) on their final stretch this weekend.
The borage is bright green, the red peppers are as tasty as ever, and the asparagus tender as only white asparagus can be. A vegetable menestra competition at the Castel Ruiz Culture Centre (6.30 pm) and medieval plays on the streets are among the options available on 1 May.
On Friday, there is a cultural wine tasting and on Saturday the day will end with fireworks at the Paseo del Queiles (10.30 pm) and the great Vegetable Concert, with singers Kilo and Shara at midnight in the Plaza de los Fueros.
With all these vegetables, we should still leave room for the traditional “culecas” —a large bun of sweet bread containing one or two hard-boiled eggs— typical of the Feast of Jesus Christ which is celebrated on Saturday. The order of the Volatín will be in charge of distributing them one more year.
