“I am certain that no king has a more beautiful palace or a castle with so many golden rooms,” wrote a German traveller when he visited the Palace of Olite in the 15th century.
Now you can feel the royal magic as you go from one room to the next and imagine what life was like at the court of the Kings of Navarre, with beautiful rooms, exotic gardens and a zoo to boot. No expense was too much for the rulers of the ancient kingdom.
On Friday, the Palace of Olite will be opening its doors to the public and providing access to its halls and towers so everyone can admire this National Monument. If you visit the Palace on Sunday, you can also enjoy some jazz music, as part of the Background music in the palace programme —an original mixture, no doubt.
A walk through the narrow streets of Olite will take you past noble stone houses with coats or arms on their facades and grandiose wooden eaves, mediaeval galleries and splendid churches, and the Roman wall surrounding the town.
