13 hurt in the first running of the bulls

Monday, 07 July 2008

The first running of the Bulls in San Fermin was full of excitement and a difficult run. The six bulls from Conde de la Corte took four minutes and twenty seconds to complete the course and enter the bull ring. At the opening of the run the participants sang a homage to the mountaineer and habitual runner, Iñaki Ochoa de Olza, who passed away recently.

During the run several people were injured. J.P. from California, USA, 20 years old, suffered concussions, same as A.H. (23 years old) from South Africa. The Spanish runner J.G.G. received a leg injury and J.M.E.A. received spinal injuries. This four were taken to the Hospital de Navarra and all the others were taken to the Hospital of Virgen del Camino: A.M.R. (Spain, 22), A.B (UK, 21), C.N. (New Zealand, 23), E.S.O. (Spain, 32) and T.A. (Australia, 26).

At the start of the race the bulls left the corral and headed up the Cuesta de Santo Domingo in a tight group, however they quickly began to spread out. One of the bulls ran to the far right outside of the course which appeared to be quite dangerous, but there were no major injuries. At the top at the street at the entrance of the Plaza Consistorial the more serious injuries occurred.

In the Plaza Consistorial there were many runners packed together, which made for a chaotic situation. As the final two bulls exited the Plaza one of them contacted the wall and fell, separating it from the group. At the end of Estafeta one of the bulls became separated from the group.  The Dobladores took control and did a great job.  The bulls entered the bull ring one by one, except for the last, which finally arrived very late to end this first Encierro de San Fermin 2008
