On 15 August 778, the army of Emperor Charlemagne led by Roland and his twelve peers met their death in the thorny forests of “Ronzesbal”.
Years later, this historic event was preserved for history in one of the most beautiful poems of the time, the Chanson de Roland which made the name of Roncesvalles famous across Europe.
