The Day of the Vixen in Mendigorría

Tuesday, 02 December 2008
On Sunday the aromas of chistorra and wine will permeate throughout Mendigorría.
The people of Mendigorría have been celebrating the Day of the Vixen since time immemorial.

It was customary for numerous men in the town to go on a tour of the local bodegas, tasting the new wines made in each one. To explain their absence and make sure the womenfolk stayed indoors and did not witness their escapades, they claimed that there was a vixen roaming loose in the streets of the town.

Hence the name of the Day of the Vixen, a feast during which townspeople and tourists alike enjoy some chistorra sausage, roast chestnuts and the local wine, all of it accompanied by the music of the txaranga of Mendigorría.

Half way between Pamplona and Tudela, this municipality of slightly over 10,000 people is the commercial and service hub of Navarre’s Middle Zone. In medieval times it was a stronghold that defended Pamplona and its wide, curved avenues are criss-crossed by other, irregularly shaped streets reminiscent of that age.
